In
addition to our Children's,
Young People's
and Parents'
groups, we provide training for Professionals
working with children with ADHD in education, including
whole school training, play workers, health workers and
professionals in partner organisations such as Connexions,
the Police, the Fire Service and Youth Justice.
We
believe that children and their parents should be involved
in every stage of the design, development and delivery of
the ADHD
Foundation's
services.
Children
and Young Peoples Skills Building Groups
When
parents have accessed our programme, children and young
people are invited to their own skills building group. Children
and young people learn about their ADHD which includes information
about treatment and medication, executive functioning skills,
self control and developing their talents, incorporating
social and emotional aspects of learning.
Children’s
learning styles are often not best advanced in conventional
classroom settings. We help them progress, not in spite
of their ADHD, but through a deeper understanding of it.
We reframe ADHD in terms of exploiting special talents that
these children and young people have. They can use art,
IT, music and sport to learn and build self esteem.
We
help them to learn the skills necessary to reintegrate them
into mainstream life at school and in the community and
therefore, help them learn to overcome isolation and low
self esteem that leads to anti social behaviour and poor
mental health outcome. Their life chances are enhanced as
individuals, with their families and peers.
1:1 intensive
work with children and young people in need
We
also run a variety of intensive one to one programmes which
may include specialised ADHD coaching. This is offered at
our offices in Liverpool or on an outreach basis at schools,
colleges and other agencies.
Some
children or young people may be referred from other agencies
for coaching such as social services or Youth Offending
Teams. Parents can speak to agencies that support their
child if they feel this type of more intensive support is
needed.
