What is an EHCP and how do I access one for my child?

An education, health and care plan is a plan that enables your child to get specific support in educational settings.

What does the process look like?

The process of getting an EHCP starts with requesting your local authority to assess your child’s needs. This can be requested by a parent and/or caregiver, education professionals, and health care professionals.

The local authority must tell you within six weeks whether they will assess your child’s needs. If they decide to assess your child’s needs they will request evidence such as medical and/or educational reports and carry out the EHCP needs assessment.

What happens if an assessment is not offered?

If they decide not to offer an assessment, you can appeal this decision within two months.
